Rupa Subcounty, Moroto District – In a significant milestone for the Building Resilience in Conflict Affected Communities in Karamoja (BRICK) project, Riamiriam Civil Society Network (RCSN-K) has commenced the rollout of the Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) methodology to beneficiaries who recently received payments for Cash for Work activities.

The distribution of VSLA kits to 10 VSLA groups marked the beginning of this exciting initiative. Beneficiaries eagerly received the kits, eager to kickstart their savings journey.

“VSLA will help us save money, access loans, and invest in our businesses,” said Akello Mary, a beneficiary from Rupa Subcounty. “We’ll no longer rely solely on our husbands for financial support.”

Empowering Women, Empowering Communities

The VSLA methodology aims to promote financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment among BRICK project beneficiaries, particularly women. By providing a structured savings framework, VSLA groups will foster a culture of financial discipline, mutual support, and collective growth.

“I was able to buy livestock using my Cash for Work payment,” said Napeyok Margaret, another beneficiary. “With VSLA, I’ll save for my children’s education and expand my business.”

Cash for Work: A Catalyst for Change

The recent Cash for Work activities, implemented under the BRICK project, provided beneficiaries with a vital source of income. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the opportunity, citing improved livelihoods and enhanced economic stability.

“Cash for Work helped me pay medical bills for my sick child,” said Lokol John, a male beneficiary. “Now, with VSLA, I’ll save for the future and support my family.”

Sustaining Momentum

RCSN-K, in partnership with UNDP and KOICA, remains committed to supporting BRICK project beneficiaries. The VSLA rollout marks a significant step towards sustainable economic development in Rupa Subcounty.

As the VSLA groups begin their savings journey, RCSN-K will provide ongoing technical assistance, training, and mentorship to ensure the success of this initiative.

“VSLA is a powerful tool for economic empowerment,” said Magadalena Ederu, the Program and Advocacy Officer. “We’re excited to see our beneficiaries take control of their financial futures.”
