Building Peaceful Communities Together: Security Personnel Trained on Conflict Analysis and Community Engagement

MOROTO, UGANDA – In a bid to promote peaceful communities and improve relationships between security agencies and communities, Riamiriam Civil Society Network – Karamoja, with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) under the Building Resilience in Conflict Affected Communities of Karamoja (BRICK) project, held a training session for security personnel on Conflict Analysis, Conflict-Sensitive Policing, and Community Engagement.

The training, which took place at Hotel Leslona, aimed to equip security personnel with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively engage with communities, analyze conflicts, and develop conflict-sensitive policies.

“We recognize the critical role that security personnel play in promoting peace and stability in our communities,” said SP Ayikoyo Sydney, Moroto District Police Commander(DPC).

 “This training is a step in the right direction, and we are committed to supporting initiatives that promote peaceful coexistence between security agencies and communities.”

He emphasized the importance of community engagement in promoting peace and stability.

 “As security personnel, we must work closely with communities to understand their needs and concerns. This training has equipped us with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively engage with communities and promote peaceful coexistence.”

Joseph Oumo, the Regional Officer in charge of Child and Family Protection Unit, noted that the training was timely and relevant. “The training has helped us to understand the importance of conflict analysis and community engagement in promoting peace and stability. We are committed to applying the skills and knowledge gained from this training in our work.”

The training was facilitated by experts from Riamiriam Civil Society Network – Karamoja and brought together security personnel from the Uganda Police Force, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), District Internal Security Organization, and selected local councilors.

“We believe that building trust and collaboration between security agencies and communities is crucial in promoting peace and stability in Karamoja,” said Richard Omoding, Executive Director of Riamiriam Civil Society Network – Karamoja. “This training is part of our efforts to promote peaceful communities and improve relationships between security agencies and communities.”

The BRICK project, implemented by Riamiriam Civil Society Network – Karamoja with support from UNDP and KOICA, aims to promote resilience and sustainable development in Karamoja. The project focuses on promoting peaceful communities, improving livelihoods, and enhancing access to basic services such as education and healthcare.
